Murthy's tantras in samskRitam etymology
Murthy's tantras in samskRitam etymology
Here are the tools and techniques (tantra) for etymology.
1. Constructive or Additive (or Compositive (samyOjika) tantra
2. Reductive or Divisive (vibhajita) tantra
Constructive or Additive or Compositive tantra
1. In this tantra, a seed alphabet (moola beejaakshara) is chosen as the starting point.
2. Different vibhakti (vibhakti) parivartana (transformations) (case transformations) options of the moola beejakshara are identified and written out or expanded out.
3. Suffix alphabets (uttara akshara) options are also identified. The uttara akshara modifies (vibhakti parivartana) the combined two alphabet word in its object class derivative (यौगिक yaugik) or (utpanna) power or role of the chosen suffix alphabet.
4. Additional uttara akshara could be added for further word creation by the utpanna power of the second uttara akshara (uttaraakshara).
5. Three or even four uttara akshara sequential additions are possible.
6. After each additive (samyOjaka) process, further vibhakti parivartana could be applied.
7. Prefixes (poorva) could be added starting from the moola beejaakshara or after successive suffix adjoining process (yOgeekaraNa or samyOgeekaraNa) (yOgeekaraNa kriya or prakriya).
8. vibhakti parivartana could also be done after each addition or adjoining of the prefix or suffix.
9. I will provide examples for all the steps of prefix or suffix adjoining and also vibhakti parivartana for the applicable steps.
Reductive or Divisive (vibhajita or vibhajana) tantra
1. In this tantra (technique), a word is chosen. The word could be of any number of akshara (alphabets).
2. The word could potentially have:
1. multiple numbers of prefixes and
2. multiple numbers of suffixes,
3. may belong to any vibhakti (case),
4. singular,
5. two (Yes, samskritam and languages derived from or influenced by samskritam ) have a number format for two which is separate and distinct from three or more) or plural,
1. a gender format.
2. In samskritam and most of the samskritam derived or influenced languages, have genders for not only nouns, and also verbs and verb formats.
3. The moola beejaakshara of the chosen word is identified. This requires skill and practice, which could be gained after getting experience in the samyOjaka tantra.
4. It is OK to try and test one or more of the akshara as the moola beejakshara, further to eliminate those that seems to lead into incorrect or inappropriate analysis or vibhajana tantra results.
5. Trial and error will also yield good insights into the word formation and transformation process.
6. Knowing the meaning of the word and the intermediary words in the vibhajana tantra intermediary steps will help you to identify if you are in the rights path, or not, so that you may continue in the chosen steps or place the results aside for later review and start with other options of the beejaakshara.
6. From the chosen option as the moola beejaakshara, proceed to the uttara akshara or the poorva akshara and continue.
7. Make copious notes all steps of the process and all options, and the reasons for choosing a path.
8. This is like a tree branch analysis or fishbone analysis tantra.
9. It is ideal to start with the poorva akshara analysis, as the poorva akshara does not have vibhakti parivartana, and mostly adjective (guNa vaachaka) modifications, and also as there are only a few poorvakshara options in samskritam and languages derived from samskritam.
10. It is recommended to chart your steps in a tabular format and a tree branch formation for pictorial viewing for you, your team and also those who may learn the techniques and choice of options.
I will add examples in my future postings for both tantras. I have developed algebraic and similar symbols in my previous posts of analysis.
